This 8-hour course will enhance the skills and abilities of incumbent public safety dispatchers regarding the increase in suicide rates and the handling of such incidents. While this course focuses on the framework of handling suicidal callers, special attention is given to post traumatic stress disorder and how it affects a public safety dispatcher. This course will provide the student with the background information, concepts, techniques and an understanding of the emotional impact of dealing with suicides and suicidal callers. The course is also intended to create an awareness of the signs of suicide in coworkers and provide options for questioning individuals, persuading them to seek help, and referring them to appropriate resources.
